A furnace ball (13) improves the combustion performance in for example the furnace (10) of boiler apparatus (1). The furnace ball (13) is of refractory material such as a ceramic and has a plurality of holes or through-bores to allow combustion air or gases to pass through the ball to the fuel in the furnace bed with relatively low resistance. By using a plurality of these balls (13) in the bed a medium is provided encouraging the combustion process to continue in the bed. The furnace (10) of the boiler apparatus (1) is preferably of the down draught type and uses solid fuel, delivered from a supply (11/11A). The combustion air for the furnace (10) is heated by heating means (23-28) using another fuel, specifically oil or gas: the heating gas produced by said second fuel can flow in contra-flow to the passage of the combustion air flowing to the furnace (10). The boiler (4) of the boiler apparatus (1) preferably utilises water tubes (5) and cleaning of combustion dust and other particles from the tubes (5) is achieved by a cleaning arrangement wherein steel balls from a supply means (21) are caused to fall into the combustion gas passages between the tubes (5) and be deflected by deflectors on the tubes so that the balls strike the tubes (5) to dislodge the combustion particles etc thereon. The steel balls (20) can be magnetic to assist subsequent collection. |
