Surfaces of billet segments (2) delivered to a machining unit (1) (in particular, a grinder) are machined according to the information obtained from a surface fault detection unit (6, 7). The image information from the surface fault detection unit is fed to an image processing unit (11) and is used as input to a computer (13). The latter is connected to the machining control system and has a comparison and evaluation module (15), with a fault data base (16). The digitised image information is compared with stored images of typical surface faults using a pattern recognition process. The fault detection unit attached to a cross beam (4) includes at least one camera (8) and a lighting unit (9) above the table (1) carrying a billet segment. |
