Benzoic acid derivatives of formula (I), their optical and geometric isomers and their salts are new. R1 = CH3, CH2OH, OR4, or COR5; Ar1 = pyridine or 1,4-phenylene, furan or thiophene (all substituted by R6); X-Y = -C(R7)=CHCCCH3, -C(R7)=CH-C(R8)=CH2-, -CC-CC-, -C(R7)=CH-C(O)-N(R9)-, -CC-C(O)-N(R9)-, -C(R7)=CH-C(O)O-, -C(R7)=CH-C(S)-N(R9)-, -CC-C(O)O- or -CC-C(S)-N(R9)- (all attached from left to right or vice versa); Ar2 = phenyl (substituted by R10 and R11) or pyridine, thiophene or furan (all substituted by R10) and it is ortho or meta to X-Y; R2, R3 = H, 1-20C alkyl, halo, OH, acetoxy, alkoxy, polyether, NO2, amino (optionally substituted by one or two lower alkyl groups) or acetamido; R4 = H, lower alkyl, or -COR12; R5 = H, lower alkyl, -NR'R" or -OR13; R6 = H, halo, 1-20C alkyl, OH, -OR14, -OCOR14 or a polyether; R7-R9 = H or lower alkyl; R10, R11 = H, 1-20C alkyl, halo, OH, acetoxy, alkoxy, polyether, NO2, amino (optionally substituted by 1 or 2 lower alkyl), acetamido, CF3, alkenyl or -(CH2)n-R15; R', R" = H, lower alkyl, mono- or polyhydroxy alkyl, aryl (optionally substituted) or an amino acid or peptide residue; or NR'R'' = heterocycle; R12 = lower alkyl; R13 = H, 1-20C alkyl, alkenyl, mono- or polyhydroxy alkyl, aryl or aralkyl (optionally substituted) or a sugar residue; R14 = lower alkyl; R15 = OH, acetoxy, alkoxy or polyether; and n = 1-6. |
