An apparatus for treating liquids which are contaminated with solid, suspended or dissolved substances and emulsions, contains a microfiltration or ultrafiltration system provided with a ceramic filtration tube. This filtration system leads to an evaporation system for removing any remaining dissolved or emulsified substances by evaporating the liquid. Any inert gases present do not interfere with the treatment process and do not affect the quality of the water recovered. Evaporation is carried out at reduced pressure using mechanical vapour compression. The rotary speed of the circulation pump in the filtration system is regulated using a frequency converter, depending on the temperature and pressure in the system, the speed being reduced once a set temperature and/or pressure limit is reached. Removal of concentrate from the filtration system can be varied, the flow being controlled by a valve or pump system. Permeate from the filtration system is removed to a vacuum tank, the rate of removal being controlled by a pressure regulating system, or alternatively if this is not present the evaporation system can be constructed to make the filtration system operate at reduced pressure. The pressure-regulating system consists of a pressure valve that opens once a set pressure level has been reached on the filtrate side. A pump system such as a hose or membrane pump can be installed in the pressure-regulating system. Any pump installed is used to maintain a pressure difference between the pressurised and vacuum side. The treatment method carried out using this apparatus is also claimed.
