Vehicle components which are protected against theft contain a component memory with component data that is specific to the component and specific to the vehicle. The vehicle owner obtains a chip card on which at least the component data that is specific to the vehicle is stored. The vehicle owner can request a replacement component by way of a device 16 which reads out the component data from the chip card and programs 26 the component memory of the replacement component accordingly. In this way, rapid and reliable procurement of replacements parts is possible.
