[Also in Division B1] In filtering machines in which an endless belt 3 has to be entrained over a rotating drum 1 (Figs. 7, 10), one or both edges of the belt are formed with beads 4 which engage guides 5. In Fig. 7, a rotary vacuum filter drum 1 dips into slurry in a tank 2 and picks up material which is then compressed between belt 3 and drum 1, scraper 18<SP>1</SP> removing solids from the drum, and some liquid being collected from belt 3 in trough 18. Compression rollers 15 and tensioning roller 13 are provided, and guide 5 comprises two curved rods 10 (Fig. 6), the bead 4 of belt 3 engaging the outer edges thereof. In Fig. 10, belt 3 itself is of filter cloth and uses vacuum drum 1 as a support, solids being removed from belt 3 as it passes over rollers 19, and a tank 20 being provided in which belt 3 is washed. Guides 5, in this case, are longitudinally slotted tubes (Fig. 9) in which beads 4 engage, with the rest of belt 3 extending through the slots. Beads 4 (Fig. 1, not shown) comprise tapes which are folded round rope or cord cores and then sewn along the edges of belt 3. The ends of belt 3 are secured together by two strips of fabric having slots which are arranged to interengage and are fastened by a transverse cord or wire (Figs. 1 and 2b, not shown). |
