PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To arbitrarily control the size of lithium titanate particles and to obtain lithium titanate having the optimum size in accordance with various uses. SOLUTION: A titanium compd. is allowed to react with an ammonium compd. in water and the resultant titanic acid compd. is allowed to react with a lithium compd. in water to form lithium titanate hydrate seeds. In the presence of the seeds a titanic acid compd. or a titanium compd. is allowed to react with a lithium compd. in water to obtain the objective lithium titanate hydrate by the grain growth of the seeds. The objective lithium titanate is produced by dehydrating the lithium titanate hydrate by heating.
