An impact device (10) for breaking up and separating hard material comprises an actuating system for providing a faster cycle rate as well as an increased impact force. More specifically, the device ( 10) includes a pair of pistons (173, 175) movably arranged in a cylinder (28) to cooperate in compressing the gaseous component pr ior to initiating the blow. A closed tube (204) is provided to fluidly interconnect opposite chambers (177, 181) adjacent the two p istons (173, 175) to coordinate the different movements of the pistons to effect the desired compression. The impact device (1 0) is particularly well suited for use in an impact bucket (12).
