PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To permit one transmission device to correspond to different transmission systems by providing channel arrangement means, which group plural channels that are set on a transmission line and which can arrange the present system and preliminary system channels on the duplexed links on the transmission line in accordance with plural transmission systems. SOLUTION: This transmission device 20 groups N-pieces of channels on the transmission line into n-pieces of groups and the signal processing parts 23 and 33 of the present-system 201 , and the preliminary system 202 process signals STS-n in respective group units. The channel arrangement of the respective groups is set to a UPSR system by the respective units of a path switch 40. The channel arrangement of the respective groups can be set by a different BLSR system by switch parts 26a, 26b, 36a and 36b and bridge parts 29a, 29b, 39a and 39b. In the transmission device 20, the UPSR system and a BLSR system of the differing channel arrangement systems can coexist, and flexibility and extensibility improve.
