A low-voltage, high-current, polyphase circuit-breaker has bimetallic tripping means 24 to cause the opening of the circuit-breaker contacts 12, 13 with a time delay in response to excess current up to a lower predetermined value, selectromagnetic tripping means 70 to cause the opening of the contacts without delay in response to excess current above the lower value and fusible current-limiting means 25 which immediately disconnect the controlled circuit and cause the opening of the contacts in the event of excess current above a higher predetermined value. In the arrangement shown, on moderate overloads, the bimetal 24 deflects and by means of a screw (not shown) turns a latch 78a clockwise about a fixed pivot 83. The latch 78a releases a lever 77 which under the bias of a spring (not shown) rotates clockwise about a fixed pivot 75 and forces down a member 54 to turn a trip-bar 16 common to all the phases. In the event of a higher fault current, the current in a single turn winding 64 magnetizes a core 70 sufficiently for an armature 72a carried by the member 54 to be attracted so as to turn the trip-bar without delay. Under severe short-circuit conditions, the device 25 fuses to open the controlled phase and at the same time forces out a plunger 30 which turns the latch 78a to cause tripping of the circuitbreaker. The circuit-breaker is provided with a common operating-mechanism (indicated at 20) for the contacts in all the phases and each phase has the three tripping means shown, all the means acting on the common trip-bar 16. |
