A stocking device e.g. for self-service baskets, comprises a basket support 17 having a sleeve 18 slidable on post 19 under the weight of baskets and against counterbalancing cord 34 and spring 37, and support engaging elements 23a-23c helically secured around rod 22 rotatable by handwheel and belt against cord 29 and spring 30 to allow the support to rest on the next lower element as the stock grows till eventually the stock fits bifurcated trolley base 39 which is movable into and around the cash desk end to take up to two stacks. Each element is provided with a cushioning spring 24a-24c.
