Salt is produced by evaporating sea water which is applied to the outside of a rotary drum (5) heated by combustion gas, the feed of sea water to the drum being controlled as a function of the temperature recorded by a probe (17) in or near the drum. Also claimed is producing salt by evaporating sea water which is applied to the outside of a rotary drum heated by steam, the resulting wet salt being removed from the drum surface and fed through an agitator-conveyor in which it is further dried by steam. Preferably the agitator-conveyor has a hollow wall within which the steam flows. In both embodiments the drum rotates on a horizontal axis, the water is applied or dripped on to its top region and a scraper removes the salt from the drum exterior at a location downstream from the region in the direction of rotation. The water is filtered and pre-heated upstream of the drum. Fresh water is recovered from the combustion gas or steam downstream of the drum in a condenser cooled by the sea water. |
