The locking mechanism consists of a U-section bracket through which the safety line (C) passes, and a lever (2) in two articulated sections (20, 21). The free end of the first lever section (20) is connected to a safety harness (M), while its other end has a cam (20b). The first section is also pivoted to the second section (21), which turns about an axis (5) that is fixed relative to the bracket. The base (1a) of the bracket has a recess (6) to receive a section of the safety line which is pressed into the recess by the cam (20b) and locked in place when a downward force (F6) is applied to the harness, e.g. when a person wearing the harness falls. The cam has two surfaces (20c, 20d) which are inclined relative to one another at an angle of 90 - 160 degrees - the same as the surfaces of the bracket recess - with a rounded corner between them.
