The protection device responds to an over-temperature in the vicinity of a power transistor (1), for short-circuiting the load current leads (3,4) of the power transistor, using a bimetallic spring (2). The spring is provided by a bimetallic spring band, attached to one of the load current leads (3) at one end, its free end (7) spaced from the second current lead (4) and moved into contact with the latter due to the bimetallic characteristics, in response to an over- temperature.
