In the photobiological separation of gas mixtures containing carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) by converting CO2 into algal biomass and oxygen (O2) by photosynthesis, CO2 is removed by light-induced assimilation and then dissimilation of an algal culture, which is changed at brief intervals between a state in which CO2 is absorbed in light and liberated in the dark, then the CO2 liberated by dissimilation is converted to algal biomass and O2 by algal culture in a photosynthesis reactor. Also claimed is the apparatus used in the above process.
