DOWNHOLE HYDROCARBON PUMP

An improved downhole valve pump for producing hydrocarbon fluids from a reservoir. A reciprocating valve element (22) attached to a stem (24) selectively contacts a valve seat (18) to prevent fluid flow through a valve housing (10). Reciprocation of the valve element (22) and stem (24) is guided with first and second guides (34, 36) which restrict lateral movement of the valve within the housing (10). A gasket (40) can be positioned to facilitate makeup and to attenuate forces exerted by the moving valve element (22). The invention increases hydrocarbon fluid flow through the housing (10) by eliminating components restrictive to such flow, thereby increasing the overall pump efficiency.
