In a steplessly variable speed ratchet gear for a motor vehicle of the kind wherein an input driven variable throw eccentric 8 oscillates the inner races of friction roller ratchet clutches 14 and the outer races 15 drive an output shaft 7, a second wedging roller ratchet clutch 29 between the input shaft 6 and outer races 15 of the first ratchet clutches 14 permits engine braking on overrun of the output shaft. A ring 10 freely rotatable on the eccentric 8 is fast with a number of bushes 11 in each of which is journalled a pivot pin 12 of a link fast with the inner race of one of the ratchet clutches 14. Teeth 31 on the outer races 15 of the ratchet clutches 14 mesh with teeth 30 on the outer race 28 of the ratchet clutch 29 the inner race of which is formed by the input shaft 6. The gear sizes being such that the engine braking is greater than it would be through the highest ratio. The outer race 15 is fast with a shaft 16 carrying gears 19, 20 in permanent mesh with gears 21, 22 freely rotatable on an output shaft 7 and selectively clutched thereto at 25. In Fig. 2 the ratchet clutch 29 is in parallel with a positive clutch 32, 33<SP>1</SP> which is normally held disengaged by cam projections 37 on the eccentric 8 engaging the end of the clutch member 33. When the eccentric 8 is positioned at its maximum eccentricity the projections 37 are aligned with recesses in the clutch member 33 and a spring 36 engages the clutch 32, 33<SP>1</SP> to provide a drive which by-passes the ratchet clutches 14. On reducing the eccentricity of the disc 8 the cams on the projections 37 disengage the clutch. |
