<PICT:1003405/C2/1> An antibiotic Canarius which (a) is effective in inhibiting the growth of vaccinia, Newcastle disease, Influenza A and Coe viruses and (b) is effective in inhibiting the growth of various yeasts, and in its essentially pure crystalline form (c) is soluble in water, dimethyl sulphoxide and glacial acetic acid, and insoluble in butanol, higher alcohols, acetone and ethers, (d) has the elemental analysis C = 38.40%, H = 4.94%, N = 24.05%, O = 31.85%, (e) has a molecular weight of 394, (f) has an ultraviolet absorption maximum in water at 264.5 mm , (g) has an optical rotation [a ]25D + 55.4 (c = 0.09% in water) and (h) has a characteristic infra-red absorption spectrum as shown in the figure, may be produced by cultivating Streptomyces canarius var. canarius NRRL 2976 or a canarius-producing mutant thereof in an aqueous nutrient medium under aerobic conditions until substantial activity is imparted to the medium by the production of canarius, and isolating canarius from the culture medium, particularly by adsorption on a surface-active adsorbent followed by elution therefrom.
