The invention concerns a portable precision calliper (1) comprising a slide (2) and a rod (1) each provided with a jaw (10, 20 respectively). The slide is further provided with electronic means (11) displaying on an electronic display (12) the distance between the jaws (10, 20). The electronic means are powered by a battery (110, 111). The rod (2) is provided with a magnetised ruler (21) with a magnetising cycle lambda . The electronic means (11) comprise a sensor (112) equipped with a network of magnetoresistive electrodes arranged opposite said ruler (21). The resistance values of the magnetoresistive electrodes are a sinusoidal function of the sensor (112) longitudinal position along the ruler (21). The magnetoresistive electrode network comprises at least certain electrode sets each consisting of at least eight series-connected electrodes, so as to increase the electric resistance of the sets and to reduce the power consumption of the whole device.
