A transducer (56) in a magnetic storage device (10) includes an elongated magnetoresistive element (64) having an active region (65). First and second electrical contacts (66) couple to the elongated magnetoresistive element (64) on opposite sides of the active region (65). A bottom inductive write pole and shared shield (72) is positioned adjacent the elongated magnetoresistive element (64) and includes a body region (122) and a pole tip region (120) proximate the active region (65). The shared shield (72) includes a notch (124) defined between the pole tip region (120) and the body region (122) to thereby improve magnetic stability in the pole tip region (120). A top inductive write pole (79) is spaced apart from the bottom inductive write pole and shared shield (72) to form a magnetic gap with the pole tip region (120) for inductively writing information.
