A spindle (41) driven by a motor (53) drives a slider (61) on which a workpiece is mounted. One of two additional supports (65) are threaded on the spindle and move when the spindle is rotated. The additional supports slide on a support track (67) which provides a stable support for the sliders. The sliding supports move at different rates to the workpiece slider and effectively shortens the unsupported length of the spindle. The relative support lengths are chosen to minimise the resonant vibrations when the spindle is rotated at fast rates.
