The system (40) has a data input unit (10) and a display unit (60) for representing characters depending on the value of the generated data word. At least one value identifies separating data words which divide the input sequence into entry sections, which are placed in memory (48). A control unit (42) reads an entry section, or part thereof, corresp. to the new data word at least once during the generation of the entry sequence depending on at least one new data word generated since the last separating word. The control unit selects the entry section to be accessed last from several sections corresp. to the new data word.
