(A) Ligands of formula (I) are new (with the exception of those compounds in which: R<1>-R<6>, R<7>, R<9>, R<11> = H; n, m, o, p = 0; A, B, C = OH; and R<8>, R<10>, R<12> = Me or Et); R<1>, R<2>, R<3>, R<4>, R<5>, R<6> = H; T (optionally substituted by halo, NR<7>R<8>, PR<7>R<8>, OR<7> or SR<7>); 1-4C alkoxyalkyl; aryl, alkylaryl, heteroalkyl or alkylheteroaryl (all optionally substituted by one or more T); or cycloalkyl (optionally substituted by halo, NR<7>R<8>, PR<7>R<8>, OR<7>, SR<7> or T); or any two of the groups R<1>-R<6>, where there is no heteroatom separating them, may join to form a 5-8 membered cycloalkyl ring; the ring optionally contains one or more heteroatoms (selected from N, P, O and S); the ring is optionally substituted by T, halo, 1-4C alkoxyalkyl, NR<7>R<8>, PR<7>R<8>, OR<7> or SR<7>; R<7>-R<12> = H; T (optionally substituted by halo, NR<7>R<8>, PR<7>R<8>, OR<7> or SR<7>); 1-4C alkoxyalkyl; aryl, alkylaryl or heteroaryl (all optionally substituted by one or more T); or cycloalkyl (optionally substituted by halo, NR<7>R<8>, PR<7>R<8>, OR<7>, SR<7> or T); e.g., if R<7> is a group substituted by OR<7> X = N or P; A, B, C = halo, NR<7>R<8>, PR<7>R<8>, OR<7> or SR<7>; n, m, o, p = 0-6. (B) complex compounds comprising: (a) ligands of formula (I); and (b) metal ions of group 4 (Ti<4+>, Zr<4+> or Hf<4+>), group 5 (V<4+>, V<5+>, Nb<4+> or Nb<5+>), group 6 (Cr(0), Cr<2+>, Cr<3+>, Mo, W), group 7 (Mn<2+>, Mn<3+>, Mn<4+>, Mn<5+>, Mn<7+> or Re), group 8 (Fe<2+>, Fe<3+>, Ru<2+>, Os<6+> or Os<8+>), group 9 (Co<2+> or Co<3+>) or group 11 (Cu<1+> or Cu<2+>); with the exception of such complex compounds in which: R<1>-R<6>, R<7>, R<9>, R<11> = H; n, m, o, p = 0; A, B, C = OH; and R<8>, R<10>, R<12> = Me or Et).
