The basis of a rod electrode for an electrical accumulator is a conductive framework made of parallel prismatic rods 2, which are connected to a tab outlet conductor on at least one side by means of a yoke. The rods are coated all round with an active compound 3 by means of a pasting operation which is matched to the grid plate technology, but the intermediate spaces 7 between the rods are kept free of the compound over an approximately equal width. When the electrodes are stacked in alternate polarities and with separators 14 placed between them, an electrode configuration results which is similar to that of known cells having bipolar rod electrodes, in that the rods of one electrode in each case project into the intermediate spaces between adjacent electrodes of opposite polarity (cf. the Figure), and the separators extend in a meandering shape between the electrodes.
