The supermarket trolley can be removed from a parking bay (2) via a turnstile (3), which is released only after the identity of the trolley user is read from an inserted identity card (5), with subsequent erasure of the user identity upon return of the trolley to the parking bay. When a supermarket trolley is not returned the customer is identified and charged with a fine next time he or she uses the supermarket.
