A seal for a ball or roller bearing comprises one or more sealing-rings including a rubber &c. ring which is externally covered by a protective shield, the latter having a flange with an edge which serves as a sliding-contact surface. In an embodiment, a ball bearing has an outer race 1, Fig. 1, an inner race 2 and balls 3 and is mounted on a shaft 5. An L-shaped rubber &c. sealing-ring 6 has a shank 6a which is urged towards an axial face of the inner race 2 and a shield 7 has an inward flange 7a which also engages said axial face of the inner race 2. A deflecting-ring 8 has an inwardly-directed flange 8a which forms a labyrinth seal with the inner race 2. The sheild 7 and ring 8 are clamped to the outer race 1 and the ring 6 is prevented from rotating by being gripped between the shield 7 and the ring 8. In another embodiment, the rubber &c. sealing-ring is 0-shaped in cross-section. In further embodiments, the rubber &c. sealing ring 11, Fig. 3, is V-shaped and has a lip 11a engaging the inner race 2 and a rubber ring 12 is provided between the shield 7 and the ring 8; the sealing-ring is L-shaped, has a lip engaging the inner race and may be bonded to the shield; a rubber sealing-ring 22, Fig. 5, has a lip 22a which engages the outer periphery of the inner race 2, the shield 7 has a flange 7a which engages the ring 8; a rubber &c. sealing-ring is interposed between a U- section shield 7 and a U-section deflecting- ring 8; a rubber &c. sealing-ring is of C-section and the deflecting-ring has an axial flange which forms a fine clearance with the rubber &c. ring and the inner end of the shield bears against the deflecting-ring; the shield and the deflecting-ring embrace the axial faces of the races and a V-shaped rubber &c. sealing-ring is located by a ring 27, Fig. 8; the deflecting-ring may be omitted; the rubber &c. sealing-ring may be bonded to the shield; a clamping-ring 30, Fig. 11, may be provided, the seal may be held in a groove 1a in the outer race 1 and a lip 6a of a groove 1a in the outer race 1 and a lip 6a of a rubber &c. ring 6 bears against a chamfered face 2b of the inner race 2; the rubber &c. sealing-ring 6, Fig. 13, is bulbous and projects into a groove 2a in the inner race 2; and the face on the inner race which is engaged by the rubber &c. ring is concave. In embodiments referring to roller bearings, a tapered roller bearing has rollers 3c, Fig. 16, and a resilient sealing-ring 6b has a V-shaped section and has a lip 6c which engages a face 1b of the outer race 1 and the ring and shield are received by a slot 2f in the inner race 2; an axially-directed flange of the shield bears against a housing; and a location-plate 33, Fig. 18, serves as the clamping-ring, a resilient sealing-ring 6 is clamped between the plate 33 and the shield 7, which is held in a groove 33a of the plate 33. Grease may be provided in the cavities between the shield and the resilient sealing-ring and the shield may be of synthetic plastics material.
