Patient respiratory compliance, resistance and muscle pressure determination method system and appliance

The method involves occlusion of the patient's air way for a short period during an inspiration or expiration phase. At the commencement of the occlusion, the patients breath flow and volume of air drawn in or discharged are determined. During the occlusion, pressure in the airway is measured and change in the airway pressure is measured as a function of time. Within the breathing cycle at different times the occlusion is initiated with several breaths and from the measured values the characteristic as a function of time of the change in muscle pressure is determined. This curve is then integrated with time to obtain the characteristic of the muscle pressure as a function of time.
