Vehicle collision detection method

The method involves emitting a frequency modulated wave from a vehicle. A wave reflected from the object is received. The received wave is mixed with a component of the instantaneous emitted wave and a mixed signal is generated. The frequency of the mixed signal is a measure for the distance of the object from the vehicle. The mixed signal is filtered for further processing using a filter with a frequency response which enables the amplitude of the filtered mixing signal to take on different values with a distance change between the vehicle and the object. A temporal distribution of amplitude values of the filtered mixed signal is provided. The distribution is compared with stored distributions of amplitude values and a side displacement is determined between the vehicle and the object.
