OVERFILL PROTECTION FOR FUEL TANKS

A fuel storage tank (3) is disclosed which is fitted with an overfill protection device for automatically shutting off flow of fuel into the tank when the fuel reaches an intended maximum fill level. The overfill protection device comprises a fill valve (4) located in a fuel fill tube (5) and linked to a diaphragm or piston (6) which is displaceable within a chamber (7), said chamber communicating with an aperture which is arranged to vent the chamber into the tank. The device may include a float valve (10) for controlling the aperture and maintaining the aperture closed until fuel in the tank reaches a predetermined fill level, whereupon the aperture is opened and the piston or diaphragm is displaced to cause closure of the valve.
