A steerable truck (300) for railroad cars is provided for controlled and uniform yawing of the axles (327, 328) of the truck (300), by providing a yawing response which is linear substantially throughout the range of movement of the axles (327, 328). Pivotably supported pedestals (333, 334) equalize load distribution, while an improved axle bearing construction accomodates pivoting of at least one axle end. A damping apparatus provides stiffness in the steering response so as to reduce hunting.
