A torque limiter which prevents the transmission of torque from a drive source to a torque responsive element when a predetermined torque limit has been reached, operates by transmitting torque between a drive member (10) and a co-axial driven member (25), having a plurality of balls (40) therebetween engaged within precisely shaped sockets (36,38) contained within each member. As excess torque occurs, the plurality of balls (40) cause the driven member (28) to axially displace with respect to the drive member (10), engaging a set of teeth (64) thereon with an aligned second set of teeth (68) restrained within the housing (20), thereby preventing torque transmission. The second set of teeth (68) is allowed to rotate, relative to the housing (20), through a predetermined angle into a torsionally compliant mount (76,94,104) before contacting substantially rigid structure (78). This allows the teeth (64,68) to engage smoothly at higher operating speeds. Indication of the torque overload event may be achieved by detecting the limited motion of the second set of teeth (68) relative to the housing (20) with a slidably mounted plunger (136) within the housing (20) and axially located by a detent (134) in the member (66) containing the second set of teeth (68). <IMAGE> |
