<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element formed by using antiferroelectric liquid crystals with which the stable assigning of intensity levels is possible. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal layer 21 which exhibits an antiferroelectric phase in a bulk state and forms a ferri phase while the layer is held sealed between substrates 11 and 12 and an electric field is kept impressed thereon is sealed between the substrates 11 and 12. Either of the liquid crystal molecules in a first orientation state and the liquid crystal molecules of a second orientation state switch to the other along the cone drawn by the liquid crystal molecules of a chiral smectic CA phase according to the polarity and size of the impressed voltage. The ratio of the liquid crystals of the first orientation state and the liquid crystals of the second orientation state, therefore, changes according to the polarity and magnitude of the impressed voltage and the directors change continuously according to the impressed voltage. Then, the assigning of intensity levels is made possible by arranging polarizing plates 23, 24 across the substrates 11, 12.</p> |
