PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a composite which shows low light loss, is capable of precise control of a refractive index and having improved humidity resistance, heat resistance and solvent resistance by dispersing a divinylbenzene-containing polymer in a siloxane-bond-containing inorganic matrix obtained by hydrolyzing an organosilicon compound having a hydrolyzable organic group. SOLUTION: A mixture containing divinylbenzene and 0-95 wt.% styrene is added to a hydrolyzable-organic-group-containing organosilicon compound of the formula: (R<1> )n Si(OR<2> )4-m (wherein R<1> is a lower alkyl or an aryl; R<2> is a lower alkyl; and m is 1 or 2), and the mixture is subjected to hydrolysis and polymerization at room temperature to 60 deg.C under agitation in the presence of an acid catalyst comprising an inorganic acid or an organic acid and a polymerization initiator in an inert gas atmosphere or in a vacuum while the formed alcohol is being removed to obtain an organic/inorganic polymer composite composed of a siloxane-bond-containing inorganic matrix and divinylbenzene- containing polymer particles dispersed therein in nanometer order and having a glass transition temperature of 100 deg.C or above. |
