A current collector comprising a metal ring with a sharp edge directed towards a fuel cell electrode is coldwelded thereto. The metal ring 13 has a bore 16 for the gas supply, and the sharp edge can be cold-welded to the surface of the electrode 14 at the same time as the elements 13, 14 are pressed into the casing 15. Alternatively the metal ring is part of the metal rear wall 19 of the electrode holder, and screws 25 tighten the metal ring and the electrode together (Fig. 6, not shown). The electrode may be nickel or silver, and the metal ring is correspondingly nickel or silver, or alternatively steel with a nickel or silver surface layer. In the case of the silver electrode, cadmium may be used as the metal ring or surface layer, as cadmium alloys with silver.
