An unsaturated polyester having terminal phosphonate groups is made by reacting an unsaturated polyester having free hydroxyl groups with a phosphonate of formula <FORM:1008846/C3/1> where R and R1 each represent a phenyl, alkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl or alkaryl groups or such groups substituted by halogen, phenoxy or C1-C4 alkoxy groups, the amount of phosphonate used being at least one mole per equivalent of hydroxyl in the polyester. The unsaturated polyester is made by reacting (a) an a ,b -ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, (b) a dihydric alcohol, and, possibly, (c) a saturated dicarboxylic acid and (d) an alcohol containing three or more hydroxy groups. The phosphorous-containing polyesters may be copolymerized with unsaturated monomers using the normal catalysts and promoters. In the examples, polyesters made by reacting maleic anhydride, phthalic anhydride and ethylene glycol (possibly together with propylene glycol and trimethylol propane) were reacted with diethyl ethane phosphonate, dimethyl methane phosphonate or dibutyl butane phosphonate, the products admixed with styrene and(or methyl methacrylate and the mixture copolymerized by heating with benzoyl peroxide. Specification 883,754 is referred to.
|
