PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain Cu or a Cu alloy having corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance and a highly hard surface by using Al or an Al alloy as a coating material for the surface of a base material composed of Cu or a Cu alloy, executing heating in an inert gas atmosphere using flux essentially consisting of fluoride, melting the Al or Al alloy and coating the base material with it. SOLUTION: A substrate of Cu or a Cu alloy is coated with a mixture of Al particles and fluoride flux. There is a case of using the particles of Al as a coating material. Moreover, in the case Al foil is used, the base material and/ or Al foil is previously coated with flux and it is pasted on the required face, and in all cases, the coating material is heated and melted in an inert gas atmosphere. As to the coating method, Al is melted on the surface of the Cu base material, by which stable oxidized coating. Al2 O3 is developed to improve its oxidation resistance. The coating layer is formed into a Cu-Alαlayer, and there is no brittle allay layers on the boundaries. Since only the surface layer is composed of Al with high concn. and the content of Al in the whole body is small, it is maintainable without reducing its electric conductivity.
