The air freshener comprises a vessel (1) which can be filled with a rapidly evaporating active substance, e.g. insecticide and/or fragrance, and a solvent, e.g. oil. A wick (6) is provided, which is lit in order to evaporate the active substance and disseminate it throughout a room in which the air freshener is placed. The wick is surrounded by a tubular part (2) extending in an upward direction, which contains openings (4) in its mantle surface through which the active substance vapours can escape.
