PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide such a lighting device for applying a starting high voltage pulse to a discharge lamp with a spark gap as being capable of preventing the breakdown voltage rise of the spark gap and always supplying the stable starting high voltage pulse. SOLUTION: In a starting circuit to start and keep lighting a discharge lamp with the output of an inverter, an LED 6 as a light source is arranged near a spark gap SG to be emitted prior to the breakdown of the spark gap SG. A starting high voltage pulse (Vo) which is generated in the secondary winding S of a transformed T with the discharge of a capacitor C2 due to the breakdown of the spark gap SG is applied to the discharge lamp to keep lighting the discharge lamp with the output of the inverter via the capacitor C1 after the discharge lamp starts to discharge.
