An adjustable optical power limiter wherein an output optical fiber having a one-quarter pitch of Grade Index Refractive (GRIN) lens is rotated about its axis to produce incremental and varying insertion losses. An input optical fiber having a GRIN lens is optically aligned with the output fiber so that a minimum amount of insertion loss is produced in the output fiber when the output fiber is in a nominal or zero rotational position. A controller in conjunction with a step motor can incrementally rotate the output fiber from the nominal position to optically misalign the input fiber from the output fiber. In this manner, the adjustable optical power limiter can incrementally produce insertion losses in the output fiber, thereby limiting the optical output power.
