An installation is claimed for the continuous casting of a liquid metal, notably steel, comprising:-a) a tundish (6) containing the liquid metal; b) a mould (10); c) a casting tube (2) for transferring the liquid metal from the tundish (6) to the mould (10), the liquid metal having a free level in the mould; d) a protective sleeve (14) placed around the casting tube (2); and e) some means allowing the protective sleeve (14) to be displaced with respect to the free level of liquid metal in the mould (10). The protective sleeve (14) is mounted on a part of the installation integral with the casting tube (2) via a screw (16, 18) which allows its position to be progressively varied with respect to the casting tube (2).
