The invention comprises substantially pure perfluoroacyl nitrites RfCO.O.NO, where Rf is fluorocarbon such as CF3, C2F5, C3F7 or pentafluorophenyl; their production by reacting a nitrosyl halide with a univalent or divalent metal salt of a perfluorocarboxylic acid at about - 10 DEG C. and isolating the product by distillation; and their decarboxylation, thermally or photochemically, to produce perfluoro-nitroso compounds. Examples prepare C3F7COONO, C3F7NO, CF3COONO, CF3NO, C6F5COONO and C6F5NO.
