The engine incorporates a first mechanism for varying the volume ratio by adjusting the starting point of the piston stroke without changing its length, and a second mechanism which varies the capacity of the cylinder by controlling the gas inlet. The volume ratio adjusting mechanism consists of a rack (10) connected to the lower end of the piston (1), a variable-position control rack (11), and a pinion (14) mounted freely on an arm (13) connected to the engine's crankshaft and located between the two racks (7). The mechanism which controls the cylinder capacity comprises an additional inlet valve (15) and a cam (16) which controls its opening and closure, mounted on a shaft connected to the crankshaft by a drive belt.
