PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a display contrast ratio by surely generating preliminary discharge and lowering light emission luminance due to the preliminary discharge. SOLUTION: This drive method is constituted so that gas for discharging is enclosed between opposite substrates respectively formed as electrodes, and a display is performed by controlling light emission according to the discharge generated between the electrodes, and the luminance of the light emission is made to become a high state or a low state according to a falling speed or a rising speed of a voltage for generating the discharge. At this time, before the discharge for performing the display is generated, a prescribed voltage is applied to the prescribed electrode of the electrodes to generate the preliminary discharge. This preliminary discharge is performed by applying a negative polarity pulse with the prescribed voltage, and the voltage falling speed V/t1 of this negative polarity pulse is set so as to become later than 100 volt/ microsecond. |
