A rigid box-like frame supports thermally insulated wall, roof and floor panels of non-corroding materials - typically double-skinned aluminium and/or stainless steel, with polyurethane foam filling. For pit mounting, the roof is just above ground level, the eaves bolted down on a water-tight neoprene seal round the pit rim. Skips are placed under public access chutes, with double-door air-locking (36) to reduce heat transfer and offensive emissions. Where the type of refuse and normal ambient temperature range makes it desirable, a refrigerating unit is installed, with external air circulation (22,23,24,25). Skips are raised for emptying by e.g. hydraulically operated pantograph gear. Surface-mounted versions have side access chutes and simpler handling facilities.
