Automatic clutch for vehicle

An automatic clutch in the power train of a vehicle is controlled in response to readings from sensors which monitor the position of the gear selector control, the position of the clutch control linkage and other parameters. If any sensor fails a failsafe programme provides preset values to enable the vehicle to be driven to a repairer. The failsafe mode can be a standby mode of control which provides sufficient driving control to move the vehicle to safety. If, for instance the gearshift sensor fails a programmed sensor value is generated by the sensor on the gearbox.
