Fibre optic device for automatically detecting foreign substances in a liquid, with a box (10) immersed in the liquid with means (28, 34) of transmitting a light beam through a liquid and means (30, 34) of capturing this light after it has passed through the liquid; at least one light detector (54) receiving the captured light beams and generating an output signal corresponding to the light intensities received in at least two bands of wavelength in which the substances to be detected have different light attenuation characteristics; means of treating the output signals and signals corresponding to the intensity of the light beam in the two bands, and means of recording and/or publishing the treated signals and/or setting off an alarm when the signal is greater than a predetermined level.
