A continuous peritoneal dialysis is carried out by providing a dialyzer element (10) for being exposed within the peritoneal cavity having a filter membrane, and an interior dialysate passageway (12). The membrane maintains pores sufficient to allow diffusion of blood toxins. The dialyzer element (10) is implanted into the peritoneal cavity of a patient, a transfer fluid is infused into the patient's peritoneal cavity, and allowed to dwell. A continuous supply of substantially fresh dialysate fluid (26) is then directed into the interior dialysate passageway (12) of the dialyzer element whereby it is exposed to the transfer fluid by diffusion through the membrane. Toxins from the transfer fluid are diffused into the dialysate in the dialyzer element to form toxic dialysate fluid which is continuously removed from the dialyzer element.
|
