Cashless payment system using portable data terminal

The payment system has a chip card (4) inserted in a portable data terminal (1), for updating the data held in the chip card memory in accordance with a cashless transaction. The data terminal has a rectangular housing with operating buttons (2) and a read-out display (3) and a second reception slot for a further chip card (5) on the opposite side to the reception slot for the first chip card. The second chip card contains a control circuit, cooperating with the data terminal control circuit for verification of the first chip card before processing the cashless transaction.
