This method automatically adjusts a control unit (RE) determining an output magnitude (T), through equipment (RS1, RS2). Individual items of equipment can change output magnitude (T) in opposing directions. The controller (R) has control characteristics (R1, R2) transmitting control parameters (P1, P2) suitably to the equipment. In the first adjustment stage (F22, T0'..T1', D1') the first equipment (RS1) is controlled by a signal (ST1), following which the first control parameter (P1) is determined. In a second adjustment stage (F21, T1'), controller (R) is activated, with the first control parameter (P1), controlling the first equipment (RS1). In addition, during a third stage of adjustment (F21, T2'..T3', D3'), in control of the second equipment (RS2), a second control signal (ST2) is employed. From this, the second control parameter (P2) is determined. The third stage of adjustment is not initiated until control (F21) of the equipment (RST) through the controller (R) has achieved a more nearly stable state (zl') in the output magnitude (T). Also claimed is the corresponding automatic equipment.
