A multilayer SAW device includes a wave propagation layer, at least one interdigitated electrode and a piezoelectric layer. The piezoelectric layer is configured to substantially isolate elements of the interdigitated electrode or electrodes. The various SAW devices provide discrete regions of the piezoelectric material adjacent to the interdigitated electrodes above the piezoelectric layer.
